Book Releases This Week [May May 17th – May 23rd]

We Are Not From Here by Jenny Torres Sanchez

Pulga, Chico, and Pequeña have no false illusions about the town they’ve grown up in and the dangers that surround them. Though their families–both biological and found–create a warm community for them, threats lurk around every corner. And when those threats become all too real, the three teens know they have no choice but to run: for the border, for the hope of freedom, and for their very lives.

Crossing from Guatemala through Mexico with their eyes on the U.S. border, they follow the route of La Bestia, a system of trains that promise the hope of freedom–if they are lucky enough to survive the harrowing journey. With nothing but the bags on their backs and the desperation that courses through their very veins, Pulga, Chico, and Pequeña know that there’s no turning back, dangerous though the road ahead might be.

My heart will not be ready to read We Are Not From Here but you can bet your bottom dollar that I’m going to read it regardless, prepared for my heart to be shaken to its core. Following Guatemalan teens as they escape from the violence of their home in search of freedom, We Are Not From Here sounds like it should be some sort of dystopia book – and yet, the circumstances that this book captures and portrays are very real. I’m looking forward to reading this.

This Coven Won’t Break by Isabel Sterling

Hannah Walsh just wants a normal life. It’s her senior year, so she should be focusing on classes, hanging out with her best friend, and flirting with her new girlfriend, Morgan. But it turns out surviving a murderous Witch Hunter doesn’t exactly qualify as a summer vacation, and now the rest of the Hunters seem more intent on destroying her magic than ever.

When Hannah learns the Hunters have gone nationwide, armed with a serum capable of taking out entire covens at once, she’s desperate to help. Now, with witches across the country losing the most important thing they have—their power—Hannah could be their best shot at finally defeating the Hunters. After all, she’s one of the only witches to escape a Hunter with her magic intact.

Or so everyone believes. Because as good as she is at faking it, doing even the smallest bit of magic leaves her in agony. The only person who can bring her comfort, who can make her power flourish, is Morgan. But Morgan’s magic is on the line, too, and if Hannah can’t figure out how to save her—and the rest of the Witches—she’ll lose everything she’s ever known. And as the Hunters get dangerously close to their final target, will all the Witches in Salem be enough to stop an enemy determined to destroy magic for good?

I’ve heard good things about the book that precedes this, These Witches Don’t Burn. With queer witches and supernatural mayhem, this sequel sounds like an exciting addition. With Pride just right around the corner, this book and its prequel sound like excellent choices to add to your Pride reading lists!

Book News

Cover Reveal: YA vampire anthology, Vampires Never Get Old, gets a cover!

With the news of Midnight Sun taking the literary world by storm, what I’m personally excited for is this anthology of vampires which includes an amazing lineup with authors of colour! Reading the blurb, it looks like we’ll get vampires in the modern age using social media (ooh!) and also queer vampires (aah!)! This anthology sounds like so much fun and I cannot wait to read this!

Book Announcement: We’re getting an 1970’s YA historical based in Indonesia!

Not only does this book sound absolutely incredible – set in Yogyakarta! has gang lords! based on Javanese superstition! based on real historical events! – I’m also so incredibly thrilled for Nat! We don’t see a lot of Indonesian stories out there, so I am more than thrilled that we will be getting Seribu Benang Merah/A Thousand Red Threads!

Cover Reveal: YA Thriller She’s Too Pretty To Burn gets a cover!

Okay, but how gorgeous is this cover, friends? When I read that She’s Too Pretty To Burn is a YA thriller and centers on the rebel art scene, I thought that this cover was just so fitting and perfect. Also! It’s inspired by The Picture of Dorian Gray but features sapphic girls and murder. I am intrigued. 👀

Book Announcement: We’re getting a historical fantasy/murder mystery from Rebecca Roanhorse!

Rebecca Roanhorse is giving us another book! It’s called Tread of Angels and is a mystery based on the state of Sequoyah becoming the 46th state of America?! I’m definitely interested to see what this story will be about, as I’m not too familiar with American history, particularly Native American history. I’m looking forward to this!

Book Announcement: Marieke Nijkamp is giving us another YA!

Marieke Nijkamp is giving us another YA book called When The Night Comes! Pitched as The Society meets Contagion, I’m definitely curious to read this book and what the ‘catastrophic event’ might be? Moreover, found family during the end of the world! There’s always something melancholic about the merging of these two tropes and I wonder how it will play out!

Book Announcement: Sandhya Menon’s adult rom-com has a cover!

Fans of Sandhya Menon’s work rejoice! Writing under the pen name Lily Menon, Make Up Break Up sounds delightful – about a woman who believes in second-chance romances and fairy tale endings who meets a man who’s all about ‘efficient break-ups’ and living the lavish life. This is without a doubt a haters-to-lovers romance and I’m excited to see how this story will unfold!

Book Announcement: Camryn Garret is giving us another book!

If you have been following The Quiet Pond, then you’ll know how much I loved Cam’s first book, Full Disclosure. So to hear that we are going to be getting another book by her? I was overjoyed beyond words. I’ll proudly say that I’ll read anything Cam writes and I cannot wait to learn more about her next book!

Book Announcement: We are getting four more Mindy Kim books!

I’ve read Mindy Kim’s first two books and they are just an utter delight! So hearing that we are going to get four more Mindy Kim chapter books makes me so so incredibly happy! Mindy Kim books are such a balm to the soul, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what it will be about!

Book Announcement: Percy Jackson is getting a Disney+ adaptation!

Percy Jackson fans! In case you’ve missed the big news, Rick Riordan announced that he’s going to be working with Disney to make a Percy Jackson series on Disney+! This is delightful news, especially for long-time fans, and I could not be happier for everyone who has been waiting for news like this for years. I guess this is the biggest sign that I’m ever going to get that it’s time for me to read the Percy Jackson series, huh?
